I'm part of the 92% of Christians that don't tithe. I want to. I just tell myself I don't make enough to tithe.
Then I read a Study: Christians Who Tithe Have Healthier Finances Than Those Who Don't:http://bit.ly/HealthyTithe.
And I compared it to an article about Why I Don't Believe in Tithing:http://bit.ly/tithingdifferently
What did I find out?
The church of today is not great at at giving. This isn’t exactly news. But it is a statistical fact:
- Tithers make up only 10-25 percent of a normal congregation.
- Only 5 percent of the U.S. tithes, with 80 percent of Americans only giving 2 percent of their income.
- Christians are only giving at 2.5 percent per capita,
- while during the Great Depression they gave at a 3.3 percent rate. Read more at http://bit.ly/WhatifTitheded
And so here we are . . . thrust into this endless history lesson which basically tells us you should tithe, if you want to, but that life was different "back then" and not everyone tithed. I look around churches across America and what I am seeing is white privileged. I'm seeing the Church operating like a business. I'm watching Church politics infiltrate the national debate for social mores. I'm watching rich people telling me to tithe to build their empire. Is it God's Empire? Are we doing what God wants us to do?
Dear Lord, God of all things, Creator of Heaven and Earth, please help me to understand your will, and not to twist the words of the Bible, the faith of your Disciples, nor the Spirit of Christianity to support my laziness, my lack of passion, devotion, and willingness to give. I believe that you are laying on my heart to look into tithing, and as you have said in your Word, Seek & you will find - I seek you Lord to give me wisdom, enlightenment, and sustenance. Be with me as I try to become a better Christian, a more devoted follower. Speak to me as I work through the philosophy, the Words before me, and the opinions of those who write on the subject. Shed light on Truth Lord, and help me to find your path.
